Ceasefire Protests Shut Down Golden Gate Bridge, I-880 in Oakland for Hours

Bridge Reopens to Traffic; Updates on Highway Closures

Golden Gate Bridge Reopens

The Golden Gate Bridge reopened to traffic on April 16, 2024, at 6:01 am after being closed for approximately five hours due to cease fire protests. The bridge was closed to all traffic beginning around 7:30 am PDT.

Highway 1 Closures

Three landslides on Highway 1 south of the slip-out in Big Sur have resulted in ongoing road closures. The latest update on the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) website indicates that construction on the world's largest wildlife crossing will also necessitate overnight closures on weekdays for a portion of Los Angeles County's 101 Freeway.

Other Highway Impacts

NBC Bay Area reported that traffic on I-880 in Oakland was also blocked for several hours due to the cease fire protests. Additionally, Caltrans announced plans to invest $3.7 billion for an expansion of the I-15 highway in Utah and up to $4 billion for the Brooklyn Bridge.
